A Victorian renovation for the modern age
Famed for her interior design skills on social media, StephFromBelmont has been speaking to Sterlingbuild about how she expertly renovated the kitchen in her Victorian house
“A kitchen extension or a revamp?"
“We went with a kitchen extension! Those of you that own a Victorian home will know that they are not necessarily known for their kitchen size.
After umming and ahhing for a few years, we decided that a kitchen extension was the best way to make use of the space. The impact of Covid meant we were spending more time at home and we could not believe we had lived with the kitchen for so long.
The Build
“When planning the extension, the first thing we both decided on was that we needed to incorporate as much light as we could.
“We wanted the space to be as light and airy as possible, as the conservatory (that we only used in the summer!) was stealing all of the light into the back of the house."
“Before we had the architects plans drawn up, roof lights and bifolds were at the top of the list – even if I had to compromise somewhere with the interiors! We are lucky to have a lovely garden, which we wanted to incorporate and have a real inside/outside feel within the extension.
The Results

“Throughout the build, I was really conscious to not lose the traditional feel of the house. As silly as it sounds, I didn’t want the extension to look ‘new’, so I spent weeks deciding on bricks and roof tiles, prior to the build to tie it all in.
“The tiles and the roof lights are a slightly more modern touch, but they have been invaluable in opening up the space.
“Even on a cloudy day, as soon as you walk into the kitchen, you are hit with the feeling of airiness, light and space. The rooflights have completely transformed the look of the kitchen.
“We had originally planned for two rooflights, but I am so pleased we pushed the budget to allow us to have three.
"We've created a cosy home."
