The benefits of triple glazing and how it can change your home
As the winter months start to creep in, one thing that people will be looking for is warmth – which is where triple glazed windows come in, although they have perks all year round
Now summer has very much taken a back seat and the coats and scarves are starting to make appearances, many people will be wondering how they can fully maximise the heat in their houses.
While the obvious answer may be to turn the heating on, with energy bills set to rise again, homeowners are always looking for other ways to keep their property warm in the colder months.
One method of doing so is by installing triple glazed windows in your home, which make a big difference and rather importantly, aren’t just useful for the winter months. Let us explain why...
We’ll start at the top – for those unaware, a triple glazed window is three panes of glass that is sealed within a frame. However, it is the middle of these panes which make triple glazing such a viable investment.
That one pane alone improves the energy performance compared to a double-glazed window by up to 50%, which is subsequently represented in the U value. You can read more about U value here, but essentially, the lower the U value, the better the energy performance.
Building Regulations state that you cannot have a window in your home that is worse than 1.6 U value, but that isn’t a problem with triple glazing, where the U value can be as low as 0.6. For context, the U value of a wall is generally around 0.3.
In fact, VELUX’s CFU Fixed Flat triple glazed window has a U value of 0.6 and an example of how a window with a low U value makes a huge difference is in the temperature it can store.
The surface temperature of a double-glazed window in a room that has been heated to 21 degrees will be around 16 degrees, while a triple glazed window will be 18 degrees. This, in turn, leads us to the next point…
Naturally, because of the lower U value and the way triple glazing keeps the heat in better, you’ll subsequently end up saving money on your energy bills as a result.
It is important to note that triple glazing is more expensive than double glazing, but it is very much an investment that you’ll get back over time.
For example, the switch to triple glazing could save you £20 to £40 a year on heating bills, so while it may not be an investment that returns quickly, as energy bills are rising, it’s very sensible to have triple glazing in place.
However, it’s important to know that the benefits of having triple glazing aren’t just limited to the winter months – it is a great solution all year round.
For example, the noise reduction on triple glazing is always going to be better than double because there is another pane in, so your home will be quieter as a result of having them.
In addition, they are incredibly durable and this is something that manufacturers are fully aware of too – ECO+ for instance have a 20-year glazing guarantee on their ECO RESET fixed triple glazed roof window, offering peace of mind as well.
Also, during the summer months, triple glazed windows will help keep the heat out of your home too, due to their extra thickness!
So if you’re feeling the cold this winter and want a solution that can last you many years in every season, triple glazing is the answer.
