This is a question we're often asked at Sterlingbuild, and it's often hard to get a definitive answer. So we consulted both VELUX and the Planning Portal to get their expert advice.
Do I Need to Get Permission for a VELUX CABRIO?
The Planning Portal says in Permitted Development for Householders; Department for Communities & Local Government (2014):
"A balcony is defined as a platform with a rail, balustrade or parapet projecting outside an upper storey of a building. A Juliet balcony, where there is no platform and therefore no external access, would normally be permitted development."
However, The Town & Country Planning Order that came into force in April 2015 says that permitted developments do not include the construction of balconies. It doesn't clarify the installation of or VELUX or FAKRO balcony windows though.
Our friends at VELUX said none of their windows needs to have planning permission but they can't guarantee the renovation work you're planning for your home won't.
If in doubt, we will always advise you to talk to your local planning authority before you invest time and money into renovations, particularly if your property is listed or in a conservation area.
What is a CABRIO Balcony Window?
A balcony roof window is a very shallow balcony with a safety railing. They're often seen on the upper floors of building, apartment blocks and are becoming increasingly popular in loft conversions and self-build projects.
The VELUX CABRIO balcony is made up of 2 windows, both which open in seconds to create a balcony. The top hung window opens up to reveal a panoramic view; the bottom window opens to a vertical position for safe access to the outside world. When closed, you have a large glazed area that will add more daylight to your living space.
Whether open or closed, you will enjoy a stunning feature. If you want to learn more about the VELUX CABRIO Balcony window, check out the video below.
VELUX CABRIO Prices
These truly stunning VELUX windows are, as you'd expect, a bit pricier than conventional roof windows.
But! Not only will a VELUX CABRIO window give you a stunning feature, more daylight and access to the outside world, they could "potentially add 5-10% to the value" of your home.
Plus, at Sterlingbuild we keep our prices low everyday and offer a free delivery option. But if you do find the VELUX CABRIO cheaper elsewhere, we will match the price and give you a present for shopping with us.
