The Redland 49 Roof Tile

The History & Features of the Redland 49

So today we’ll be installing the Redland 49, named for the year it was launched. This is the tile that really put Redland on the map as a concrete tile manufacturer, re-roofing Britain post-World War II. It’s a 15 x 9 inch tile, interlocking and laid straight bond on the roof. It’s got a single nail hole, and on the interlock we have a 3-5 mm shunt, which means we can move the tile on the roof along that interlock, to make the tile fit the length of the roof. If we reverse the tile here, we can see the weather bars at the bottom and nibs underneath – all designed to work as a well-fitting roofing system.

Rustic Red

We’re installing the 49 tile in a rustic red – it’s a lovely colour with a nice streaked effect there, to seem like weathering on the roofs. We’ve got our red effect underneath, with the black on top. What we want to make sure of, with a coloured tile like this, with a pattern on it, that we don’t put all the black, all the dark tiles in one place, all the light in another, and create blotches or stripes on our roof. What we want is a nice even mix across the roof area, to get that weathered aesthetic and get that rustic red appearance across the entire roof area.
