Common Questions & Answers for ClassicBond EPDM
What is the life expectancy of EPDM?
ClassicBond EPDM comes with a manufacturer's guarantee of 20 years. However, rubber roofs have been known to last for 50 years plus.
What Kind of glue to use on ClassicBond EPDM?
ClassicBond EPDM has two types of glue; Contact adhesive & WBA Deck adhesive. The contact adhesive is a high-strength solvent-based adhesive used for steep slopes, angle changes and perimeters of small timber deck roofs. However, roofs excess of 100 metres squared, the entire roof should be covered in bonding adhesive. WBA Deck Adhesive is a water-based acrylic adhesive used on deck surfaces such as OSB and plywood. WBA covers one side of the deck for small roofs less than 100 metres squared.
Can EPDM be installed on a wet surface?
ClassicBond EDPM should not be installed on a wet surface. A wet surface will trap moisture between the rubber and the substrate, compromising the performance of the EPDM product.
How do I join two ClassicBond EPDM pieces together?
Overlap two adjacent rubber sheets by a minimum of 75mm and mark around 8-10mm (totalling 83-85mm) extra on the bottom sheet. Apply ClassicBond EPDM rubber primer on the bottom rubber sheet and the back of the top rubber sheet. Ensure primer is touch dry and lay Pressure Sensitive Seam Tape across primed bottom rubber. Roll the top sheet over the top of the bottom rubber and remove the plastic tape. While removing the tape, perform a pressured outward sweeping motion against the join to ensure no air is trapped underneath. Once stuck together, use your Seem Roller to roll over the joint to ensure adhesion.
How is EPDM Supplied?
EPDM comes in two size widths, 6 metres & 4.5 metres, which are cut to the customer's desired length. JJ Roofing supplies only cuts ClassicBond EPDM to the closest metre.
How to seal a pipe on EPDM?
ClassicBond supplies EPDM Pressure Sensitive Pipe Seal designed to fit pipes between 12.5mm & 152mm. Firstly, place hooded pipe seal over the pipe and cut to size. Draw the pipe seal over the pipe until the pressure-sensitive seal sits soundly on the deck. Wrap the clamp around the neck of the pipe seal to ensure that it stays in place. Mark around the base of the pipe seal and begin to apply a thin, even coat of primer within the marked rubber (if dusted, use a scrubbing pad). Ensure the primer is touch dry before removing the plastic from the Pipe seal and rolling it onto membrane using a metal roller.
Are ClassicBond available in different colours?
The short answer is No. The only colour ClassicBond is supplied in is slate grey. If you have purchased ClassicBond you may notice that it appears very light in colour; this is because ClassicBond gives their rubber a dusting coat of talc. Once weathered, the roof will begin to darken.
Can you walk on an EPDM roof?
Yes, EPDM is durable enough to withstand light walking traffic for maintenance.
