Roofing terms and explanations (Part 2)

Continuing with our articles giving descriptions of some of the most common roofing terms, this second article will cover some of the most relevant ones from E to I. If you have queries about any terms that we have omitted, please get in contact with us to put in a request.  Once we have compiled an additional list of requested terms we will bring out additional articles and if there is sufficient demand we will also be able to add this as an optional download on our website.

Eaves

The eaves are the lower part of the roof, usually the edge, which overhang the house.

Edge venting

Edge venting is the material used at the eaves to allow for ventilation of the roof.

Fascia

A fascia is the trim boarding which is fixed behind the gutter and eaves. It can be a decorative or waterproofing solution.  Fascia is available from JJ Roofing Supplies in either white or black.

Felt

Roofing felt is the tar paper or other roofing material sheet commonly used on flat roofs and can also be referred to as Felt Shingles.  Felt can also be used to refer to a waterproof covering that is commonly used on sheds although this is specifically known as Shed Felt

Flashing

Flashing is the lead or other sheet metal material which is used at roof junctions to prevent leakage. It's commonly seen on a chimney.

Gable

The gable of a building is the triangular shaped end wall which sits under the sloping roof.

Hipped roof

The hip is the angle formed by two roof planes. Hipped roofs are a roof which has hip rises on all sides of the building.

Insulation

The insulation used in a roof can reduce the heat which escapes from the roof and also stop heat entering the building from the Sun's rays.

We will continue with the descriptions in the next article.
