Function of Roofing Felts

Roofing felt acts as a secondary moisture barrier, in case moisture escapes through the roofing. Roofing felts are installed directly over the decking and are hence better suited to handle harsh weather conditions. On the other hand, excessive exposure to inclement weather is prevented as shingles, roof tiles and metal panels cover the felt. These felts protect the interior of your home by acting as a barrier against rain water and wind in the event of exterior roofing materials getting dislodged.

Types of roofing felt available

There are two types of roofing felts available in the market: Paper based and fibre glass based. Paper based roofing felt consists of a paper flush filled with asphalt while the other consists of a fibreglass mesh saturated with asphalt. The fibreglass mesh has higher fire resistance as compared to the paper flush.

Precautions

There are precautions needed when you plan to install a felt on your own. It should be noted that certain types of roofing felts are thinner than the others.
