Roofing felt installation instructions

Roofing felt is still used for a variety of roofing situations such as on flat roofs and extension roofs. It can also be used as extra weather protection when it is installed as an under lining to your roof. It usually comes in rolls. Some of these roofing felts come with an adhesive backing that simply needs to be heated so the felt can be attached to your roof.

The preparation needed to be done

It is important to clean the boarding properly before you begin the installation. There should be no dirt or moisture present. If there is excess moisture present or the boarding is damaged, it will need to be replaced. Take a flat head shovel and run it along the surface of the old felt so that you can remove it easily and get rid of any stuck nails. When you remove the nails, ensure there are no wooden splinters which will damage the new felt.

Installing your roofing felt

You have to start the installation from the eave edge and then add extra layers until you reach the ridge line. Using a utility knife cut the roofing felt to size and then torch it into place or use clout nails to attach the felt. Remember to overlap the roofing felt by at least three to four inches at the edges. Finish the job by fixing the felt over the ridge making sure the entire surface is covered.
