Roofing felt

Laying roofing felt can be very complicated if you don't know what you're doing, but this can be sorted with some careful planning. It is not very difficult to do this task by yourself if you have the right information at your disposal.

Why should I use roofing felt?

Roofing felt is used to avoid any seepage into outbuildings or sheds. Roofing felt is nothing but a film of asphalt saturated paper inserted in with roof shingles or tiles. Using roof felt is not a very common practice. However, it is good to use it in the construction of your roof if the roof is made with shingles or asphalt.

Vital facts to remember before using roofing felts

To roll the material smoothly without it sticking to itself, the roofing felt is ingrained with bituminous coal and tar. It also has sand and other abrasives to ensure the same result.

The thickness of the roofing felt can be chosen as per your need. However, it would be wise to use more felt than really necessary for long lasting results.

Identifying trouble areas

Roofing felt is showing signs of wear if you notice damp spots. This means that moisture can seep through as the roofing material has become porous. Regular maintenance is the key to avoid this situation. Cracks and discolouration are signs of deteriorating roof felt.

Do not be afraid of taking professional advice or help if you have any queries or feel apprehensive about doing repairs yourself.
