One of the most neglected types of household maintenance is roofing maintenance. Your roof sees the wear and tear of everyday life just as every other part of your home, but most people rarely consider doing anything to the roof to make sure it's ok.
A roof doesn't have to be this bad to require work!
A leaky roof can cause a host of internal problems that may be costly to repair, but you don't have to spend ages checking your roof to stop these problems happening.
Don't let branches overhang the roof
Branches which overhang the roof should always be removed as they can cause damage. The rubbing or abrasion caused by the branches can cause physical damage, the shadow created by the branches can cause mould, mildew and moss to grow on the roof, and leaves that drop on the roof can block your gutters and cause damp.
Loft ventilation
A loft which is well ventilated will stay dry and be free from damp. A loft which does not allow for ventilation will attract damp, mould and cause nasty smells. You should always make sure any vents into your roof are clear from obstruction and if your roof doesn't have vents you should add them.
Look at the tiles
A quick look at the roof tiles using a pair of binoculars is generally enough to determine if you have any broken or slipped tiles. If you notice any problems with tiles you should always get a roofing contractor to make the necessary repairs.
