Replacing your roof window? Read on and refer to the following tips

Installing a replacement for your roof windows is considered to be easy if you possess a fair knowledge about DIY.

How are roof windows different from skylights?

Roof windows are quite different as compared to skylights. They do not protrude beyond the roof frame and can be easily operated as any other window. Roof windows are an excellent source of natural sunlight and ventilation. An appropriately installed roof window should ideally be sturdy and watertight.

Considerations prior to installing replacement roof windows

Before you begin the installation of your roof windows, ensure that you consider the factors mentioned below.

  • Opt for a replacement roof window that fits the pitch of your roof. Vinyl or aluminum roof windows are the best choice considering that they are maintenance free and last longer as compared to other roof windows.
  • Window dimensions are something that you need to take proper care of when opting for roof windows. Wrong dimensions will damage the window edges and you will need to reinstall the roof windows.
  • Ensure that you are completely aware of the consequences of removing the rafter.

The aforementioned tips will ensure that your replacement roof windows are installed appropriately.

Installation techniques when it comes to replacement of roof windows

Ensure that you use proper flashing for the replacement window of your choice. Flashing helps to make the installation watertight and hence it is an important part of roof windows. Before you begin with the installation, it is important to release the sashes from the hinges. Press it gently and you will hear a clicking sound. This is when the sash is released from the frame. A waterproof frame will be ideal to boost protection against water infiltration.
