Roofing felt acts as an effective weather protection accessory that is usually installed under the roof to protect it from inclement weather. It consists of a paper filled with asphalt and is available in rolls. The most common size for roofing felt is 36 inches in width. Some rolls come pre-marked to help you keep the strips straight on the roof.
Decking preparation
Ensure that you clean the decking before installing the roofing. It should be free from debris and moisture. Presence of moisture might damage the roofing felt and loosen its grip. Left out nails is another issue when it comes to preparing the decking. Ensure that all the nails are removed. Run a flat head shovel to locate nails and remove if any. Once the decking is ready, snap a chalk line 33 and 5/8 inches above the eave line. This will allow for a 3/8 inch overhang of the first strip of roofing felt. Snap the rest of the lines, moving up the roof every 34 inches.
Roofing felt installation
Start with the installation of eave edge and continue from rake to rake. Tack the paper to keep it from folding or falling off the roof. Make sure you have your 3/8 inch overhang. Once you have it adjusted and laying smooth, nail with roofing nails or staple in place every three or four inches on the lower half of the paper. Repeat the process, moving up the roof until you reach the ridge. Ensure that you overlap the paper by 6 inches at the valley and ridges. ?
