Maintaining your asphalt roof shingles

Is your roof made from asphalt shingles? Have you ever considered about roof maintenance? If roof maintenance is not in your priority list, it is time you consider it. While asphalt shingles are strong, sturdy and durable, they do get worn down and damaged by weather and debris. Thus, it is imperative to inspect the roof thoroughly.

Basics for checking up on asphalt shingles

Initially, you should clean the debris from your roof. This debris may comprise of trash, excessive dust or dirt, leaves and anything else that may soak up water and damage your floor. As asphalt roof shingles are subjected to extra damage from water deterioration, you should look forward to clean the debris from time to time.

In case your roof is collecting algae or moss, it needs to get cleared by lead control strips or by installing zinc. Flashings also need to be checked for holes and damage, and replace if required. You should also check the gutters for debris and clean them regularly. Downspouts also need to be tested by pouring water into them.

To minimise the debris, you should look forward to trim branches of trees that are hanging over the roof. You should also look for rust on the open valley metal. Sealants and caulking can be used to fix cracking and other damages. Mortar on parapets and chimneys should also be checked for weather damage.

Considering these things, cleaning and maintaining asphalt roof shingles becomes quite easy.
