Looking for tips to install roofing felt?

Roofing felt consists of heavy paper filled with asphalt. It can also act as a layer of weather protection when installed over the roof decking as an underlayment. The most common size for roofing felt is 36 inches wide.
his can also be known as 15lb paper. It should be noted that certain strips of roofing felt come pre-marked so that you can simply install them without any inconvenience. Ensure that you install the drip edge, flashing and the valley liner prior to installing the roofing felt.

Mentioned below are some ideal tips to install roofing felt appropriately.

Prepare the decking prior to the installation of roofing felts

Clear the decking appropriately before you start the installation procedure. Ensure that the decking is free of loose nails and chipped shingles. If needed, run a flat head shovel over the decking in order to get rid of debris. Once you clear the debris, snap a chalk line of about 35 inches above the eaves line so that it allows for a 3/8 inch overhang. Once this is done, ensure that you snap the rest of the line thereby moving up every 35-38 inches.

Installing the roofing felt

Begin the installation from rake to rake taking care to ensure that the paper stays down. You can do this by using tacks. With the help of a utility knife, cut the paper flush at the rake and adjust it to your chalk line. Adjust the 3/8 inch overhang after which you can staple the felt at every three or four inches. Repeat the process until you meet the ridge. Overlap the area where the paper meets end to end. Similarly, overlap the valleys, ridges and the hips by about six inches. Finally, cut the paper and fit it over the pipe.

The aforementioned steps will guide you in the installation procedure of roofing felts.
