Installing a roofing felt in 6 easy steps

Roofing felt plays an important role in protecting your home from moisture and leakage. You do not necessarily need to hire a professional to replace damaged roofing felts. While many people will tell you that staples are enough to install roofing felt, it should be noted that staples might hold the felt but will not provide as much protection as using a adhesive and nails would.

Mentioned below are some tips to install roofing felt so that you can enjoy the benefits of a better protected home.

Things you will need

  • Utility knife
  • Nail gun
  • Appropriate roofing felt
  • Ladder
  • Goggles
  • Nails

Step 1: Start at the bottom edge of your roof and roll out the roofing felt. Make sure that the side edge is lined up properly with the edge of the roof. Ensure that there is a 1 inch overhang at the bottom edge of the roof.

Step 2: With the help of a nail gun, secure the far side of the roofing felt and ensure that the nails are placed every 9 inches.

Step 3: Place another row of roofing nails 18 inches apart, and 12 inches in from the seam where this roll of felt will meet the one next to it.

Step 4: Secure the top layer with roofing nails spaced 9 inches apart.

Step 5: Repeat the process until your reach the roof peak. Continue to the next side and ensure that the roofing felt is properly attached.

Step 6: With the help of a utility knife, you can customise the felt according to the size of your choice.

Ensure that you take proper security measures, as you will be conducting all this work atop a roof. If you are apprehensive to complete the job yourself or are uncomfortable with heights, you can call in the experts who will finish the task for you.
