How to protect your roofing in the winter season

Roof damage is inevitable for many homes in the winter season. Snow-build up is a common problem which affects the overall condition of the roof due to the extra weight and moisture it imposes. Mentioned below are some roofing maintenance tips that will come in handy during the winter.

Protecting roof shingles

Roof shingles may come loose and fall out of place during the winter season. It is difficult to make them stick to the top in the winter season. You will have to use different roof tools or products for this task. Roof cement is one tool which will come in handy. You will have to apply roof cement to each and every roof shingle. This task is better left to experts as it is painstaking in nature. Shingles can also be attached with a nail gun. Avoid doing this task if you are uncomfortable with the DIY procedure. You can get a nail gun on rent from a local hardware supplies store.

Ice dams

This is another problem affecting the roof in the cold weather. Ice dam is a huge mass of ice that accumulates at the edge of the roof. They are quite difficult to remove. You can use a heat tape or cable in this task. Ensure that you purchase a good heat tape and investigate it thoroughly before using it.

Roofing felt

You can also prevent the entry of moisture by applying an additional layer of roof felt. Ensure that you measure the roof accurately before beginning with this task. It is better that you seek the help of experts in this procedure.
Precautions for your safety

It is highly recommended that you wear protective clothing and helmets while climbing up the roof. Wear safety gloves and comfortable shoes to avoid any trips and falls. Consider these useful points and protect your roofing. ?
