How to identify roofing leakages

Roofing leakages can prove to be a big problem, especially in the winter and rainy season. Lack of regular maintenance can add up to the problems. It is important that you identify such leakages before you can actually begin fixing them.

Given below are some tips which will come in handy while identifying roofing leakages:

Binocular method

Take a walk around your house with a pair of binoculars. Inspect minutely each and every corner of the roof with the binoculars. Look for the following signs:

  • Cracks
  • Tears
  • Rotting
  • Mould

Such signs are an indication of a leakage.

Tiles and sheathing inspection

Climb up the roof and check the condition of roofing shingles and sheathing. Check if you see imperfections. If any, ensure that you mark the troubled spots with a heavy object. It is better to seek assistance in this particular task. You can also ask a professional roofing contractor to examine the condition of your roofing.

Roofing features

Climb up to the roof and check the roofing features. Some of the roofing features that should be inspected are as follows:

  • Skylights
  • Chimneys
  • Flashings

If you see any gaps or broken cement seals, it is an indication that your roof requires immediate repairs.

Attic inspection

Get inside your attic area or roof space and use torchlight to spot water stains. Follow the water stains to locate the origination point. Damp insulation is another indication of roofing leakage. It is also recommended you get your roof examined by professionals at lease once in two months.
