Common roofing problems

Many people in the UK don't take roofing maintenance seriously. They wait until they have a problem with their roof before doing anything about it.

This might work for some who get lucky, but others are often left ruing their decision to pay little attention to the structure until a hefty bill arrives on the doorstep.

The roof on your home is a simple structure, but it is a critical structure, that must be checked regularly.
Some things that can go wrong with a roof include:

€¢ Damaged or slipped tiles or slates
€¢ Corroded or malfunctioning flashing
€¢ Loose mortar or decaying mortar on ridge tiles or the chimney
€¢ Broken or damaged guttering or downspouts
€¢ Structural or age damage to the supporting timbers
€¢ Moss or algae growth on the roof
€¢ Corroding slate or tile nails

The above list is not comprehensive but just shows a few of the potential problems. It's not mentioned in the list, but age is perhaps the biggest factor that can exacerbate any of the above defects. A slipped or cracked tile may only take minutes to repair but an aged roof that has gone past its usable life will need to be replaced completely potentially costing thousands of pounds.
