Chimney care and repair

Making sure that your roof is well maintained should stop inclement weather causing problems such as a leak. One point on your chimney that is particularly susceptible to damage or water ingress is the chimney.

If your roof leaks, the first place to look is usually around the chimney. There are three places to check for leaks.

Chimney pointing

The pointing on your chimney is particularly susceptible to weather damage. It's for this reason that the mortar should be checked on a regular basis for soundness. A roofer will quickly be able to tell you if the chimney needs repointing.

Chimney flashing

The flashing protects the point where your chimney joins the roof line. The flashing is usually bedded into the mortar around the base of the chimney and is lapped over the roof tiles at the base of the roof, providing a weather tight seal. Flashing is subject to wear and tear so should also be checked frequently.

Chimney pots

Chimney pots should always be firmly fixed to the top of the chimney using mortar or a sand and cement mix. This can degrade over a period of time and can crack and shift, creating a place where water may seep through the roof.
