An Apprentices Tale – Part 2 (Zoe)

Part 2 - In which the new apprentice fits a centre-pivot roof window

By Zoe Leigh

When will I ever fit a window? A question I constantly asked myself as we all learned how to fit a Duratech window last Tuesday.

To prepare for the training Jamie, being as kind as he is, gave me his job of putting together 20 booklets on Duratech, something which ended up taking me all day as our printer needs. Just to watch the next day as everyone dropped the booklets. Everything which took me so long to put together flew all over the floor and out of the order it had taken me so long to put together.

Duratech Training

We all started off in the conference room learning about the window market and the benefits of Duratech window, it was good stuff, very informative, but I think everyone was more interested in the Krispy Kreme doughnuts, can you really blame them? Next we went downstairs to fit the windows, though all my efforts to sneak back into our creative team office were for nothing as I got dragged downstairs to get hands on with the windows. Honestly, looking at those boxes I was clueless and you'd think being in a group of men it would be a fast process of putting the window in but I was very, very wrong.

We started putting all the parts together and figuring out where they went; I mean how many JJ's staff does it take to fit a window? It sounds like a bad joke. We managed to figure most of it out and although they let me use the drill, I wasn't very good and managed to split the wood (although I felt pretty badass using it). We were ahead of the other team and when we had finally fixed up the flashing kit, we had to figure out which way up the window went as we were trying to put it in. Sadly that was the part that everyone found the most difficult, after we finally figured that out, we were the first ones done out of two teams. It was a great experience, I learnt a lot about the product and how to fit it (not that I'd be able to pick any of it up anyway). I was on the winning team and got a chance to talk to some more of the staff everyone is good at their own things and you learn something different from them.
