A guide to choosing roofing felt

Broken or cracked roofing felt should be replaced at the earliest opportunity in order to prevent further damage. Roofing felt acts as a barrier against moisture and prevents water seeping through the roof, entering the house and damaging the walls.

There are different kinds of roofing felt available on the market, so you can choose according to your needs and budget.

Function of roofing felt

Roofing felt acts as a secondary barrier to prevent moisture and water seeping through the roof. While roofing felt may not be as versatile as shingles and tiles, it can protect your walls from damage and keep your home warmer during winter months.

Types of roofing felt available

Paper base and fibreglass mesh are the two main types of roofing felts available in the market. While paper base roofing felt consists of a heavy stock paper filled with asphalt, fibreglass mesh contains a mixture of fibre resisting material and asphalt.

Considerations

The roofing felt which you choose should be of the top most quality. Take proper measurements before you purchase any. If needed, take samples of your older roofing felt to select a design and texture which matches the exterior of your house.

Once you have chosen roofing felt, it's always a good idea to get a professional to install it.
