David replies : The duo blind operates in a similar way to the normal blackout blind. The blackout blind pulls down from the top and the pleated blind will pull up from the bottom. The pleated blind is a not fixed at the top or bottom though so can be positioned anywhere.

Fakro Flashing Colour

Chris asks : What colour is this flashing? Am having trouble finding a brown flashing. Thanks.

David Answers :

The std flashing is now grey on the outside , However Fakro's old product was a brown colour whihc was replaced approx 4-5 years ago.

You may struggle to find the old style flashing kits now.

Flexible sun tunnel question

Martin asks

Does this fit onto ridged tiles

Nick answers

Hi Martin, the integral flashing fits at batten level and then the tiles are brought onto the flashing, so no problem with ridged tiles and the foam gasket fills up any gaps. Many thanks Nick

Nick Answers

Hi Dave, yes fine to cut the tunnel down to the final distance required, many thanks Nick

Can I have a sun tunnel reaching over 20m?

Nick Answers

Hi Fiona, physically it's possible to extend a flexi tunnel to 20m but the light will dissipate over that distance and you might be disappointed with the result. Many thanks Nick

Will this work with sloping ceiling. Plaster board direct to underside of 125mm rafters. Rosemary type clay tiles.

Nick Answers

Hi Stan, yes fine for a sloping ceiling as the kit comes with 2 variable angle elbows. If you've got a short distance from ceiling to roof then cut down or omit the rigid tube. The integral flashing works with small clay tiles but you need some tile and a halves to gain full cover onto the flashing. Many thanks Nick

Ciaran asks......

Can the flashing be provided in Aluminium to facilitate Welding into an Auminium Standing Seam roof?

David Replies

Thanks for your question. If you use the flat roof sun tunnnel you can manufacture your own upstand and flashing detail. the sun tunnel comes with an aluminium cover section which would dress over your kerb detail. Your site flashing would then be used to dress in accordance to your standing seam.

Hi Nick, We are thinking about having a sun tube installed to light our very dark lounge. It is a big room 18 by 12. What size model would you recommend to get maximum light output, having ceiling dome in the centre of the room please? Also I think the drop from roof to ceiling is probably closer to 3 metres so we do not want to "lose" too much light in the pipe on its way down. Many thanks, Laura

Nick answered;

Hi Laura, to make the difference I recommend 2 rigid tunnels of 14" diameter such as the TWR 014 2010 you enquired about. The rigid tubing delivers the most reflected light but i think you will need 2 for the room size advised, although this depends if any other windows adjacent. For the 3m drop add a 1200mm extension tube of the same material ( see the link below ). All items ex stock from us, many thanks Nick.

Loft conversions vary enormously in both cost and make-up. This partly depends on the size and the shape of the roof. Simple roof shapes are easier to convert, but also much depends on how you choose to use your living space.

Is there enough headroom at the centre under the ridge? You ideally need 8ft (2.4m) clearance, although you may find that you can still get a useful room from as little as 7ft (2.1m).

Assess whether your roof was built using trussed rafters or purlins, as the latter is much easier to convert into usable loft space.

Decide if you are planning to employ a professional builder or DIY, expert or novice, there’s something for everyone. For complex conversions employ a loft conversion company.

Check if you need building regulations and note if you need any emergency access

Make the most of your views.

Select a window with the right length in relation to where it is on your roof and the roof pitch. The bottom edge of the window should be 90 – 120 cm above floor level. Generally the flatter the roof the longer the window.

15% of your room‘s total area should be windows.

Traditional (pre-1965) rafter and purlin roof construction
This type of roof, pre-1965, is ideal for loft conversions as it usually has a reasonably steep pitch and relatively clear spaces between the supporting framework

Modern (post-1965) trussed rafter construction
This type of roof, used widely in houses in Britain since 1965, usually has a shallow pitch and more struts. As a result they are more difficult to convert. Look out for thin sections of wood (typically 75mm or 3 inches deep) and tell-tale rectangular metal plates used to join the timber together.

The refurbished site has now been up and running for a few weeks and we are making steady progress. It’s all very exciting times here at SterlingBuild as I write this. The warehouse move is done and we now have over 1,000 windows to despatch to you the customers when needed.

Now the reason for this post, we received an order Tuesday morning from Granada Television for two of our Fenstro skylights. These skylights were to be delivered to the Coronation Street design department. I can only think that the Rovers Returns has decided to put in some skylights! So our skylights might be on television, if there’s a good enough shot that shows the roof that is. Maybe our skylights will be in the background during an intense shot! Who knows.

Maybe Eastenders or Hollyoaks will come calling next. So grab your Fenstro, by clicking Skylights along the top navigation bar on the website and clicking the Fenstro window.

See you next time!

SterlingBuild Newsletter Autumn 2010

Welcome to the SterlingBuild newsletter.
